Le circuit de Spa-Francorchamps a été construit dans les années 20 sur les routes de trois villages (Malmedy, Stavelot, Francorchamps) afin de créer un tracé au cœur des Ardennes belges.
Les courses d’Endurance ont été parmi les premières à se disputer sur le circuit belge avec Antonio Ascari remportant les premières 24 Heures de Spa en 1924.
Un nouveau tracé long de 7 kilomètres a été inauguré en 1979. Il est plus technique avec plus de virages mais dispose également de plus de dégagements afin d’accroître la sécurité.
En 2006/2007 des modifications ont été apportées à la piste avec la construction d’une nouvelle pitlane et d’un bâtiment des stands aux normes F1. Depuis sa création en 2012, le Championnat du Monde d’Endurance de la FIA (WEC) a toujours organisé la course précédent les 24 Heures du Mans (les Total 6 Heures de Spa) à Spa-Francorchamps en faisant ainsi la répétition générale avant la plus grande course du monde.
