Focus on…The Le Mans track

ELMS - 07/06/2016

The famous « Circuit de la Sarthe », has seen a lot of changes since the first race in 1923 with some sections of the track now part of the legend of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However the current 13.6km layout provides competitors in the world’s most famous motorsport event with a unique challenge that cannot be found anywhere else.

First, there is the Dunlop Bridge, a very famous landmark of the Le Mans circuit and is a draw for the photographers who will hope for clear skies on Sunday morning to capture the sun rising between the track and the bridge.  The cars travel uphill from the start finish straight in front of the thousands of spectators lining the track and filling the grandstands, before cresting the top under the bridge before beginning the downhill stretch to Tertre Rouge.

Tertre-Rouge is the last turn before the Hunaudières straight and the start of the sections on the public roads. The goal of the drivers is to carry as much speed through Tertre-Rouge in order to be as quick as possible in the first chicane of the Hunaudières.

The Hunaudières straight is one of the most famous parts of the track, as well as one of the fastest with Mulsanne. The long straight down to Mulsanne Corner is divided by two chicanes, Forza and Michelin, which slow the cars and provide a very technical for the drivers.

Comes after Michelin the cars speed up to 300 km/h before braking hard for Mulsanne.

After Mulsanne is Indianapolis, a very technical turn hard on the brakes with drivers trying not to lock the wheels and finish up in the gravel.

The famous Arnage turn comes right after Indianapolis and is the slowest part of the circuit. The public area is very close of the track and the show is amazing especially at night.

After this slow part, the drivers have to be very concentrated for the Porsche turn where they arrive really quickly.

Finally the lap finishes with a final set of corners at Ford before the cars end up on the pits straight to begin another lap and where the fans will gather for the start and the finish of the race.
