What’s New in the 2014 ELMS Regulations?

ELMS - 14/04/2014

Until the season's competitors meet for the first time for the 4 Hours of Silverstone next week, let's take the chance to catch up on the updates to the regulations confirmed for the upcoming season.

European Le Mans Series races on Sundays and topping the bill

Firstly, while European Le Mans Series races in 2013 took place on Saturdays, a change to the organisation of race weekends now means that teams and drivers will be able to run in front of their fans on the Sunday of each round.  The only exception is Silverstone when the ELMS race will be held on Saturday as the 2014 series debut takes place the same weekend as the first round of the FIA World Endurance Championship. All other meetings, the two free practice sessions will be held on Saturday morning and afternoon. Sunday will be the main event for European endurance racing, with a morning qualifying session and the race in the afternoon.

Length of each event

After listening to teams, team managers and drivers following the end of the 2013 season, the ELMS organisers took the decision to amend and increase the amount of track time available on each race weekend to meet the requirements of participants.

On the first day, competitors will have two free practice sessions of 90 minutes each, as opposed to the 60 minutes available in 2013.

The qualifying session will be divided into two sessions of 20 minutes each, the first for LMGTE and GTC and the second for LMP2.  These will be followed by a 4-hour race rather than the 3-hour races of 2013.

Driving time for each driver

Following the increase of the length of race time from three to four hours, the minimum and maximum running time per driver in each class is: LMP2 With a crew of two drivers:

-          Gold or Platinum driver: maximum running time - 1:40 h

-          Bronze or Silver driver: minimum running time - 2:20 h

With a crew of three: If there are 2 Gold or Platinum drivers: - Gold or Platinum driver: maximum running time - 1:50 h - Bronze or Silver driver: minimum running time - 2:20 h If there is one Gold or Platinum driver: -  Gold or Platinum driver: maximum running time - 1:40 h -  Bronze or Silver driver: minimum running time - 1:40 h

If the crew has no Gold or Platinum driver: - Bronze or Silver driver: minimum running time - 40 minutes LMGTE and GTC

With a crew of two drivers: - The minimum driving time per driver is 1:45h With a crew of three drivers including a Gold or Platinum driver: - Gold or Platinum driver: maximum running time - 1:15h - Bronze or Silver driver: minimum running time - 45 minutes With a crew of three drivers but not including a Gold or Platinum: - The minimum driving time per driver is 1:00h

Composition of Driver Line-Ups

The regulation on the composition of driver crews in each category has also been clarified for the coming season.

- LMP2: as in 2013, a crew of two to three drivers must include at least one Silver or Bronze rated driver in the line-up. - LMGTE and GTC:  a crew of two to three drivers must include at least one Silver and one Bronze driver, or two Bronze rated drivers.
