Tyres now have to last even longer in the Le Mans Series!

ELMS - 03/04/2011

The tyres play a determining role in the performance of the prototypes and GTs, and they will be the focus of particular attention during the Le Castellet 6 Hours. The new race format calls for tyres to last even longer than in previous seasons.

Endurance and the Le Mans Series have always been a choice laboratory for the development and evolution of tyres. This year, extending the length of the races to 6 hours – and not 1000 kms – makes even more demands on the rubber, thus teams' tyre strategy will play a crucial role, as the drivers will now do seven instead of six stints in the race.

“We provide our advice and expertise to the various teams which we supply with tyres,” explains Serge Grisin, the Michelin competitions manager, the biggest supplier in the field. “Then it's up to them to decide what type of tyres they're going to use in the race as well as the strategy they'll adopt.

“From our side, we have to work on the duration of the life of the tyre,” he continues. “It's not easy for a tyre to do two stints  (around 1h 40m) at Le Castellet. The stresses in the corners, especially in the Signes curve, are very high. The tyre has to keep its robustness while still being quick. Above all, despite its progressive wear it must not upset the car's balance as this is a crucial performance factor for the drivers.”
