Thiriet by TDS Racing Claim First Pole of 2016 Season

ELMS - 16/04/2016

After a snow storm caused the cancellation of this morning’s FIA World Endurance Championship Free Practice session it was with some relief that the conditions had improved enough to allow qualifying for 4 Hours of Silverstone to proceed. The LMGTE cars were the first group out on the wet track.

Aston Martin on LMGTE Pole for Home Race

In the tricky conditions there was only one car that spun off in the short 10-minute session and as the chequered flag came out it was Richie Stanaway in the no96 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8 with a 2m19.348 lap and 0.938s ahead of his nearest rival, the no88 Proton Competition Porsche of Richard Lietz.

The no66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari 458 of Andrea Bertolini was 3rd fastest, the Italian setting a 2m20.378 lap, 0.961 ahead of the no55 AF Corse Ferrari of Ireland’s Matt Griffin.

The grid was completed with the no56 AT Racing Ferrari in 5th ahead of the no77 Porsche , the no99 Aston Martin, the no60 Formula Racing Ferrari and the no51 AF Corse Ferrari bringing up the rear.

Britain’s Kaiser Tackles Tricky Conditions to claim LMP3 Pole

Ross Kaiser took the first LMP3 pole of the 2016 season for British team 360 Racing for their home race by posting the best time of 2m13.264 in the 10-minute session as the chequered flag was waved.

French driver Dino Lunardi mastered the wet track conditions and looked on course to claim the class pole for the 4 Hours of Silverstone but lost out by 0.051 seconds at the chequered flag as Kaiser went ahead of the no19 Duqueine Engineering Ligier on the time sheets.

The no9 Graff Ligier JS P3-Nissan of Enzo Guibbert was third quickest with a time of 2m13.914, 0.650s slower than Kaiser’s best time and 0.5 seconds ahead of the two United Autosports Ligiers, with Alex Brundle finishing the session in 4th and one place ahead of Matt Bell in 5th.

The 19 car LMP3 field will line up behind the 360 Racing Ligier at 14h30 this afternoon.

The LMP2 session got underway but was interrupted with 6minutes 38 seconds on the clock as the  no48 Murphy Prototypes Oreca went off  at T7 in the wet conditions.  Despite a valiant effort to recover by the driver, the car got stuck in the gravel trap, causing the session to be red flagged.   The only driver to set a fast time up to that point was Mathias Beche in the no46 Thiriet by TDS Racing Oreca, the Swiss driver posting a 2m07.621 lap.

With the Murphy Prototypes car recovered to a safe position the session resumed and Beche immediately improved by 1.2 seconds with the no32 SMP Racing BR01 going second fastest with Stefano Coletti setting a 2m07.576 lap time.

The session finished with no improvement by the top two drivers, with the no29 Pegasus Racing Morgan of Leo Roussel in third with a 2m07.624, Harry Tincknell in the no38 G-Drive Racing Gibson in 4th, 0.2s behind the Pegasus Morgan and 0.3s ahead of the no21 Dragonspeed Oreca05 of Nicolas Lapierre.
