Martin Brundle and Egidio Perfetti Claim Road To Le Mans Pole Positions

ELMS - 16/06/2016

Former World Sportscar Champion and 1990 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Martin Brundle posted the fastest time in the red flag interrupted qualifying session for the first ever Road To Le Mans race. Brundle had posted a 3m55.748s lap in the LMP3 class United Autosports Ligier-Nissan, the car his son Alex races in the European Le Mans Series. The Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup grid was headed by the no88 Mentos Racing Porsche 911 of Norwegian driver Egidio Perfetti who set a 4m04.494 lap.

The green flag was waved to start the qualifying session on a dry track dry and an air temperature of 17.7 degrees.  The no66 Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini of Joe Twyman was given a black and orange flag for lose bodywork at the start of the session.

The session was interrupted after 15 minutes when the no24 Oak Racing Ligier of Pierre Nicolet went off into the barriers at Zone 6 and double yellow flags soon became a red flag as debris was spread across the track.

The session was soon resumed after the car was snatched and the gravel and debris cleared from the circuit.

The battle for the pole positions was intense on the long 13.6 km circuit.  The qualifying session ended 2 minutes early when Hiroshi Yamaguchi went off into the tyre wall in the FFF Racing McLaren at zone 33 and the red flag was deployed to bring the session to a close.

At the end of the session the no2 United Autosports Ligier of Martin Bundle held the top spot, 0.185s ahead of the 2015 ELMS LMP3 Champion Charlie Robertson, the young Scot having his first event in an LMP3 car since winning the title with Sir Chris Hoy last season.  The no32 Lawrence Tomlinson Ginetta-Nissan was 0.314 ahead of the no85 DC Racing Ligier of French driver Thomas Laurent on his debut on the full Le Mans circuit.

In the GT3 Class Perfetti’s Mentos Racing Porsche was six tenths ahead of the no57 AF Corse Ferrari F488 of Russia’s Alexey Basov and 2.6 second ahead of the no55 FFF Racing Team by ACM McLaren 650S of Hiroshi Hamaguchi, the Japanese driver unharmed by his late spin off the track into the tyre wall.

The grid is now set for the first running of the 2016 Road To Le Mans which will take place on Saturday 18 June ahead of the 84th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
