Record crowds as Audi wins Le Mans Series title

Audi recorded its first win in the 2008 Le Mans Series at the fifth and final race, the Autosport Silverstone 1000kms. By so doing, the German manufacturer claimed the teams' and manufacturers' titles, while with fourth place on the road, Alexandre Premat and Mike Rockenfeller won the drivers' title.
In front of an all-time record crowd for the Le Mans Series, with a gate of 53,000 spectators, Audi drivers Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello scored the victory, their first since winning the Le Mans 24 hours with Tom Kristensen in June.
The Le Mans Series runs to the same rules as the Le Mans 24 hours, with four classes of cars ranging from thoroughbred "LM" P race cars and "LM" GT road-based super cars, and so will follow the new regulations that the ACO announced this week end for 2009 to 2001.
Ex-Grand Prix driver Jos Verstappen was already crowned the champion in the "LM" P2 category in his Porsche RS Spyder, but he still recorded his fourth win of the year at Silverstone, sharing with the car's owner Peter van Merksteijn.
Corvette won the "LM" GT1 title with the race version of its C6 model run by the Luc Alphand Aventures team. Guillaume Moreau and Patrice Goueslard finished third on the road, behind the winning Team Modena Aston Martin DBR9.
Virgo Motorsport had another victorious race in the "LM" GT2 category, winning for the fourth time this season to deliver British driver Rob Bell hi s second successive title. Bell shared the Ferrari 430 GT with Brazilian Jaime Melo to win the drivers' title for the second year.
