ELMS - 19/04/2014
The first European Le Mans Series qualifying session of the season took place this morning under cloudy skies but, most importantly, on a dry track. It was a busy time on track in the first of the two 20-minute qualifying sessions as the GTE and GTC cars numbers 27 in total.
Qualification LMGTE & GTC
At the chequered flag it was SMP Racing Ferrari who reigned supreme and claimed pole position in both categories, and it was Ferrari all the way – the Italian marque filling the top six places in GTE and the top four in GTC.
Andrea Bertolini used his considerable experience to good benefit in the GTE class, claiming an impressive pole position for tomorrow's 4 Hours of Silverstone with a flying lap of 1:58.970 in the No.72 SMP Racing Ferrari 458 Italia. That was over half a second ahead of the No.66 JMW Motorsport entry of Daniel Zampieri who, in turn, was just under three tenths of a second ahead of last year's LMGTE champion, Matt Griffin. The Irishman, driving this year in the ELMS for AF Corse, lapped the track in 1:59.835.
In GTC, SMP Racing's No.71 Ferrari led the way in the hands of Luca Persiani – the Italian's quickest time of 2:00.032 being two tenths of a second clear of the second-placed No.96 Team Ukraine entry, Alessandro Pier Guidi at the wheel of the latter. Third in the category was the No.73 F458 Italia of Olivier Beretta.
Qualification LMP2
The eleven cars in the LMP2 class took to the track between 11:36 and 11:56 hrs, just after the LMGTE and GTC qualifying had finished.
More determined than ever to shine on home turf, the British teams straight away put in some impressive lap times. First it was Greaves Motorsport at the top, then JOTA Sport who at the close of the session clinched the first pole position of the season. Young Harry Tincknell today set the fastest lap of the whole ELMS weekend so far with a time of 1:47.702. He beat the No.43 Race Performance ORECA03 Judd driven by Frenchman Franck Mailleux by a tenth of a second, which was in turn ahead of the No.48 Murphy Prototypes ORECA03 Nissan by two hundredths of a second. Indian driver Karun Chandhok's lap was 1:48.912.
Tom Kimber-Smith took fourth place in the prototype class with a time of 1:48 '950, while Tristan Gommendy got the No.46 Thiriet by TDS Racing Morgan Nissan up into fifth place.
At NewBlood by Morand Racing, the team did an awesome job to repair blue and black Morgan Judd damaged yesterday after a collision with a GTE. Christian Klien started the session very well but suffered from a relatively minor off track excursion and was forced to return to the pits. He ended the session in 6th place, five tenths ahead of the No.36 Signatech Alpine of Nelson Panciatici.
Following them all were the No. 28 Greaves Motorsport Zytek Z11SN Nissan, the Morgan Judd of Larbre Compétition, Sebastien Loeb Racing's ORECA03 Nissan and the No.29 Pegasus Racing Morgan Nissan.
Don't miss the start of the ELMS 4 Hours of Silverstone at 14h30.
