Next stop Hungary for the 4th round of the ELMS

ELMS - 26/08/2013

For the fourth round of the European Le Mans Series the organisers have decided to play the most the Eastern European card in the deck. It is therefore to the Hungaroring track that competitors of the ELMS will be heading for the penultimate race of the season.

The Hungaroring is a racing circuit located at Mogyoród, 19 kilometres north-east of Budapest, the Hungarian capital. It is best known for hosting the Formula 1 Grand Prix each year since 1986. The track is located in a natural valley surrounded by rolling hills, which gave it its nickname of ‘tourniquet'. A true mixture of fast sections and slow corners, it offers spectators a breathtaking view of almost all the track.  It is rarely used and therefore requires several sessions of running to clean the track.

Cars must use a high downforce set up to achieve good lap times. Because of the narrowness of the track and the lack of long straights, overtaking is very difficult and qualifying well is essential in order to obtain a good result. Focus is therefore on the quality of the drivers, not making any mistakes, and that strategists plan well for pit/refuellling stops.

While not all drivers may like the track, it nevertheless often gives rise to great battles. Endurance racing has already been seen on the Hungarian track in 2010 with the Le Mans Series of the time, where the fight was between Audi and Peugeot. Some of this year's drivers will be re-discovering afresh the very hot Magyar asphalt, while others will be learning a whole new circuit for the first time.

The Hungaroring is, undoubtedly, one of the turning points of the season and it is where some teams could be clinching championships titles as the chequered flag drops.
