Best of British in LMP3

ELMS - 11/08/2018 - Jeff CARTER

The 4 Hours of Silverstone will feature 42 cars split into three classes, the largest being the LMP3 grid with 19 cars. LMP3 was launched by the ACO in 2015 and British teams and drivers have always been at the forefront of the new prototype category.

The first ever ELMS LMP3 champions were all British, with Sir Chris Hoy and fellow Scot Charlie Robertson securing the driver’s title, racing with Team LNT, who secured the team’s crown .

In 2016 it was the turn of Brits Alex Brundle and Christian England to take the drivers title, along with their American teammate Mike Guasch, racing with the UK based American team United Autosports.  In 2017 it was United Autosports lifting the team title once again, this time with American duo Sean Rayhall and John Falb, who have returned in 2018 to defend their crown with the team.

In 2018 there are four British teams on the grid for the 4 Hours of Silverstone with the championship currently led by the RLR MSport team. The Lancashire based outfit is currently leading the title chase with 50.5 points after securing wins at Paul Ricard and the Red Bull Ring. The driver lineup includes one Brit- Rob Garofall, one Canadian – John Farano and one Dutch driver – Job Van Uitert, with Garofall looking for win number three on home turf.

360 Racing are based a stones throw from the entrance to Silverstone and are currently in fourth place in the championship on 34 points, 16.5 points behind RLR MSport.  This is the only all British team on the grid, with Terrence Noble and Ross Kaiser having taken one podium finish with a second place at Monza back in May. They will be joined by fellow British driver James Swift.

Ecurie Ecosse is one of the most famous team names in British motorsport and in 2018 have teamed up with fellow British team Nielsen Racing. The Ecurie Ecosse/ Nielsen squad have also tasted the podium champagne in 2018 after British drivers Colin Noble and Alex Kapadia, along with their Danish teammate Christian Stubbe Olsen, finished a fighting second in Austria behind the RLR MSport Ligier.  They too will be looking for another podium finish on home soil.

The final British team on the LMP3 grid is BHK Motorsport, a new recruit to the ELMS ranks in 2018 after being formed in 2016. The team are running a Ligier JS P3 for Italian duo Francesco Dracone and Jacopo Baratto.

The British teams will be fighting hard to win the 4 Hours of Silverstone on Saturday 18 August and see the Union Flag flying above the LMP3 podium at their home race.
