Is This the Year for G-Drive at Le Mans?

ELMS - 07/06/2018 - Jeff CARTER

Since 2013 the orange and black colours of G-Drive Racing have been a permanent feature at the world’s greatest endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and over the past five races the Russian outfit has enjoyed pole positions and two podiums, however class victory in Le Mans has eluded the current ELMS championship points leaders.

G-Drive Racing have got off to a great start to the season. After finishing 4th in the opening round of the ELMS at Le Castellet, Roman Rusinov, Jean-Eric Vergne and Andrea Pizzitola drove the no26 Oreca-Gibson to victory at the FIA WEC race at Spa-Francorchamps and then followed it up with victory at Monza in round 2 of the ELMS in Italy.

2015 FIA World Endurance LMP2 Drivers Champion Roman Rusinov has driven in every race and the 36-year-old from Moscow has his sights firmly set on the top step of the podium on 16/17 June but is under no illusions of the enormity of the task posed by the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“Le Mans is so complicated,” said Roman Rusinov. “Every year we try to prepare to arrive in Le Mans in the best way possible, with the best driver line up, with the best car and with the best team. However, there are so many factors at Le Mans which can go against you.”

“Or it can be the opposite and everything can go your way and you can win, we saw this last year with Jackie Chan DC Racing, which had no problems and finished on the overall podium. You know sometimes it is just your year.  You cannot arrive and say we are going to win Le Mans, it doesn’t work like that.”

“From my point of view I just try to enjoy racing.  I love racing, I love everything that is around race cars, Le Mans, World Endurance Championship and ELMS. I just try to take pleasure from every moment when I am driving these cars.  Le Mans is a big event and you just drive it and enjoy it.

“It’s not just myself, Andrea and Jean-Eric, it is also the whole team. We have around sixty-five people working for us in order to give us the best chance. We won Monza, we won Spa but Le Mans is completely different.”

The 24 Hours of Le Mans will take place on June 16/17 and will feature 13 ELMS entries amongst the 60 cars entered for the 86th edition of the event.
