Endurance interview: Gérard Neveu

ELMS - 30/11/2009

Inspired by Marcel Proust's questionnaire, of which Bernard Pivot's television adaptation is better known by the younger generation, this questionnaire, adapted to the world of motor sport and particularly Endurance racing, should, we hope, allow the public to get to know this sport's main actors.

Team managers, drivers, circuit managers, important motor sport names…all those who accept to play the game will be welcome.

Today, Gérard Neveu, Paul Ricard HTTT circuit's Director, kindly answers our questions.

What is your fondest racing memory?

The French F1 Grand Prix in 1985 held on the Paul Ricard Circuit. I was 20 years old. That week end of July 1985 everything that represents the passion of motor sports was present on the magical circuit, to which, I am evidently still much attached.

Who is your hero in motor sports?

To me it is difficult to apply the concept of hero to motor sports.  I greatly admire and respect the men who make Motor Sports. Talent, passion, intelligence and courage are necessary to climb the podium steps. Jacky Ickx could personify one of those references.

What is your best Endurance racing souvenir?

During my short endurance racing experience: the 2009 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the archetypal Endurance race, a fight between Peugeot and Audi. An atmosphere, superb weather and a unique event. The 24 Hours of Le Mans remains one of the most important races in the world. On the Monday following the race, you realise the exceptional importance of the souvenir. Living the 24 Hours of Le Mans from the inside is an unforgettable experience.

How do you see Endurance Racing in 10 years time?

I hope as a world championship or a big international competition with fair and understandable technical regulations, allowing the most talented to win whilst offering a high quality show. The Series should advance with its time with cars providing both dreams and progress.

I think the first high performance electrically propelled racing car could progress in Endurance racing. Finally the 24 Hour of Le Mans should remain the summit of the endurance racing season without changing its authenticity.

If you were reincarnated as an Endurance racing car, which one would you be?

I am not going to be very original but my choice would be between a Porsche 917, a Porsche 936, a Porsche 956 or else the Ford GT
