Circuit Paul Ricard, end of the ELMS official test session.

ELMS - 02/04/2014

The sun has disappeared from the skies over the Circuit Paul Ricard, and the 37 cars which have been present in the South of France for the two days of pre-season testing for the European Le Mans Series are now being packed away into their race transporters.

The fifth and final practice session came to a close two minutes ahead of schedule due to a car off track, but there were no major incidents to report despite some off-track excursions and spins.  Over the course of the two days 120 drivers were registered for testing with some of Europe's best endurance racing teams and they ranged from 16-year-old Matt McMurry with the Greaves Motorsport team to 58-year-old Piergiuseppe Perazzini in an AF Corse Ferrari – with 24 different nationalities covered.

Fastest this afternoon was Tristan Gommendy in the No.46 Thiriet by TDS Racing Morgan Nissan but his lap of 1:49.770 was some way from matching Nathanaël Berton's Tuesday afternoon time of 1:48.342.  The Irish Murphy Prototypes team was testing a number of different drivers in its No.48 ORECA 03 Nissan and Berthon, a GP2 race winner, was an impressive debutant.

The green LMP2 car ended this afternoon's session second overall, its time of 1:50.571 being set by another young driver from single-seaters, Rodolfo Gonzalez.  Third this afternoon was the No.38 Jota Sport Zytek Z11SN Nissan which was in the hands of Audi factory driver Felipe Albuquerque who is on loan to the British team for the ELMS season.

In LMGTE Porsche this afternoon made some headway into the Ferrari dominance seen over the last two days.  The Italian marque continued to maintain its place at the top of the class time sheets, and this afternoon's best lap was set by Aleksander Talkanitsa Jr in the No.56 AT Racing Ferrari 458 Italia.  His time of 1:57.268 was just 0.072s ahead of the No.58 Team Sofrev ASP entry of Soheil Ayari who was sharing the F458 with French FFSA GT Tour champion Fabien Barthez.  Third and fourth fastest this afternoon were the two Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs of Gulf Racing UK (Adam Carroll in the No.86 – 1:57.890) and IMSA Performance Matmut (Nicolas Armindo in the No.76 – 1:57.926).

Fastest overall in the LMGTE category was SMP Racing, the No.72 Ferrari lapping Paul Ricard in a time of 1:55.828 on Tuesday evening with Ferrari factory driver Andrea Bertolini at the wheel.

Ferrari reigned supreme in the GTC category, holding the first five places this afternoon.  The No.64 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 of Alessandro Pier Guidi lapped in a time of 1:57.995 – just 0.025s ahead of the sister AF car of Dennis Lind.   Behind the Danish driver was the No.71 SMP Racing F458 GT3 of Aleksey Basov with his fastest lap of 1:58.232, three tenths of a second ahead of the No.95 AF Corse Ferrari entry of Cedric Sbirrazzuoli.   The No.93 Pro GT by Almeras Porsche 997 GT3R led the way overall in the GTC class, the Porsche in the hands of Franck Perera setting the fastest lap of the two days, 1:57.089, on Tuesday morning.

Everyone's attention now turns to the 4 Hours of Silverstone, the opening round of the 2014 European Le Mans Series.  A grid of 42 cars awaits, and some fantastic racing is in store for competitors, media and fans alike.  We look forward to seeing you there!
