ELMS - 20/07/2019 - Jeff CARTER
Chatin’s time would have been good enough for second on the LMP1 grid when the Le Mans Series visited Barcelona in 2009.
The session was interrupted by a red flag before anyone had completed a fast lap when the no30 Duqueine Engineering Oreca of Nicolas Jamin spun off under braking into the first corner, the French driver ending up beached in the gravel trap. The car was recovered and the session resumed with just under 8 minutes on the clock.
The second row for the 4 Hours of Barcelona grid will be headed by the championship leading no26 G-Drive Racing Aurus, with Jean-Eric Vergne posting a 1m33.640 lap at the chequered flag and then stopping on track for an unknown reason. The no43 RLR MSport Oreca will line up alonsgside the G-Drive Aurus for the race.
Round 2 winners Eurointernational secured their first pole of the 2019 season with Mikkel Jensen securing the top spot in LMP3 with a 1m40.187 lap in the no11 Ligier-Nissan. The Dane finished 0.184s ahead of the no10 Oregon Team Norma of Damiano Fioravanti and 0.438s ahead of the no17 Ultimate Norma of Mattieu Lahaye.
The LMGTE category saw the no60 Kessel Racing Ferrari snatch pole position at the chequered flag after the session had been led by the no55 Spirit of Race Ferrari. Andrea Piccini posted a 1m43.084, just 0.017s ahead of Jörg Bergmeister in the no56 Project 1 Porsche, but the German driver was judged to have set the lap while going beyond track limits and his lap was deleted.
The no55 Ferrari of Matt Griffin will start the race in second, finishing qualifying 0.258s behind Piccini. All eight competitors were covered by one second, with the top four cars covered by less than 0.4 seconds.
The 4 Hours of Barcelona will begin at 18h30.
