A Landmark Anniversary for 6 Hours of Silverstone: 1976 - 2011

ELMS - 22/08/2011

This weekend sees a gathering of stars and cars from the history of the Autosport 6 Hours of Silverstone, which celebrates its 35th anniversary and 20th running as Britain's premier international sports car event.

A unique collection of landmark cars from the history of the 6 Hour/1000km event has been brought together and will be on display thoughout the weekend.

There will be a BMW 3.5 CSL of the type raced to a dramatic victory by John Fitzpatrick and Tom Walkinshaw in the inaugural event of 1976, when they beat the faster Porsche 935 of ‘Brilliant' Bob Wollek and Hans Heyer by just 1.3 seconds.

The legendary Group C era began at Silverstone in 1982 when Porsche revealed its new car, the 956, at the Silverstone 6 Hours. The very same car – chassis 001 – returns to the scene of its only competitive appearance, joining the BMW and a host of other winning cars, including the Porsche 935 K3, Audi R8 LMP and Peugeot 908 HDi FAP.

In addition several of the race-winning drivers will be on hand throughout the weekend, including 1980 winner and the only woman to win a Formula 1 race, Desiré Wilson. For further details and information, stay tuned to Silverstone Radio through the weekend.
