ELMS - 14/06/2013
It all begins this weekend in the heart of Le Mans
Fifty six cars and 168 drivers will pass through the infamous administrative and technical checks over two days (Sunday/Monday), held on the Place de la République in the centre of Le Mans. It is a golden opportunity for the thousands of spectators, fans and enthusiasts present to get close to the cars, meet the drivers and see the new models and racers due to take the start of the 81st edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a week's time.
While the LMP1 class is completely filled with competitors from the FIA World Endurance Championship, almost half of LMP2, a third of LMGTE Am and one entry in LMGTE Pro come direct from the European Le Mans Series.
The overall winners of each category in the European Le Mans Series are effectively offered an automatic invitation by the ACO to the 24 Hours of Mans the following year; thus the 2012 ELMS Champion takes up its place at Le Mans in LMP2 (Thiriet by TDS Racing). The first two from LMGTE were offered entries in LMGTE Pro (JMW Motorsport and JMB Racing, ELMS winners in GTE Pro in 2012 although the latter will not be present at Le Mans this year). In LMGTE Am, it's 2012 class winners IMSA Performance Matmut who will compete in the 2013 race.
The 2013 winner of the new GTC category, created for this year's ELMS, will be able to take up its place in LMGTE Am next year. Regarding the LMPC class, the new regulations state that the winner of the 2013 season will be given a place at Le Mans in 2014.
Sixteen ELMS cars will therefore take the start of the Le Mans event this year, but before that it is possible to attend their first appointment of the week when they undergo their technical and administrative checks.
